Vic Reeves' Big Night Out

We are Donald and Davey Stott and we are redundant, to tell you the truth. We are both completely redundant.

If you don’t know who the Stotts are, I will guarantee you will have fun finding out. They are a couple of squeaky-voiced brothers called Donald and Davey from Shildon in County Durham. The latter wears a kilt, giant clown shoes and glasses, the former a grey leather jacket too small for him. The both don badly fitting bald caps and have black tape for moustaches and eyebrows. Even though they are completely incompetent at anything they attempt to do, they have somehow managed to interview Michael Winner, SinĂ©ad O’Connor and (Mr) Sting. Amongst others. Their other interests include starting stopping, stopping starting, xylophones and marzipan.

What’s strange about the Stotts (other than the glaringly obvious) is their longevity. When Vic & Bob made the transition from Channel 4 to the BBC, they largely cleared out their repertoire and came up with a load of new characters, yet Doanld and Davey remained. Not only through The Smell of but into Bang Bang and beyond. I’ve got them down here as Big Night Out because that’s where they debuted. It seemed to make sense. Or as much sense as it possibly could given what’s generally going on here.

The logo is loosley based on a German food manufacturer that makes cakes, cake decorations and the component parts of cakes. And also pizza and beer. And candles. Their headquarters are not far from where I (and weirdly Graham Coxon from Blur) was born, fact fans. Kind of irrelevent, really, isn’t it? Anyway, the design is meant to be a label more than anything, featuring both the most prevelant ingredients of marzipan and also a cross section of one of the most well known uses of the stuff. At least in Britain.

One day I will fulfill my life ambition of cutting one into 16 bits to create the world’s most edible chess game. Will probably need help with the pieces.
