People Place
fromThe Adam and Joe Show
£28.00 – £30.00
Hello and welcome to People Place! The show that goes wherever there’s a place with people! In it.
In all honesty, I very nearly didn’t do this one, as it’s a straight up replication from the show with very limited input slash brain power from my perspective. However, like the Sophie Willan one I did, they both actually wear the t shirt in the programme, so that’s kind of what swayed me.
The ‘both’ in this instance being Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish, who are playing desperately annoying and condescending daytime TV presenter types Nikki Boxx and Lindsay Munk respectively. People Place is sort of like a roaming roadshow of fun that visits various different places on the outskirts of London – cinemas, shopping centres, supermarkets and so forth. The ‘fun’ being largely at the public’s expense, as they get repeatedly cut off mid-sentence by both presenters. That’s if they’re given any air time at all.
A compendium of all People Places can be found here, and undoubted highlights are one bloke nonchalantly ‘having a piss’ in a Welcome Break motorway service station and another shopping in Somerfield in Woolwich who’s buying Bombay mix because he’s ‘pissed as a fart’ and ‘couldn’t give a bollocks’. There’s also a bit where they set up a girl with a Tom Cruise lookalike. They watch a film together and afterwards ask the girl if she’s going to see him again and she answers ‘no, I’m 12’. The whole thing is just ridiculous.
As a final word on the the logo – it *is* pretty horrific, but very accurate in what it’s trying to achieve; banal, MOR daytime garbage that pretends to care about what people are about but actually doesn’t give a fuck. The opening shot for each segment features numerous shoed feet stamping on said logo, which I think is a fantastically succinct way of projecting what the pair really think of this genre of television.
