Cop. Bitch. Cop, bitch, motherfucker.
I’m coming up to 250 designs and it’s pretty unbelievable that it’s taken me this long to get around to this one. For the uninitiated, Fur Q (‘fuck you’, obviously) is a US gangster rapper who features on a segment in The Day Today called ‘RokTV’. A clear piss-take of MTV, the musician is interviewed and explains how part of his act includes the live executions of some of his fans (which are all done ironically, so it’s fine). Given the prevalence of the genre in the early 90s, you’d assume the character to be a composite of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ices Cube and T and so forth.
The song ‘Uzi Lover’ is pretty standard fare, featuring violence, misogyny and hooks sampled from shit 80s songs. In this case ‘Easy Lover‘ by Philip Bailey and Phil Collins. Though I actually *do* like this song. I just can’t stand Phil Collins, as I regard him as a horrible, divorce-your-wife-by-fax, Tory, Nonce-sense dickhead who is also – when you properly analyse it – a very shit drummer, actually. But that’s probably just me.
With all that in mind, I’ve created the single cover for the song that features the typography and colours from the real-life single meshed into the shape of the titular Israeli open-bolt submachine gun. The sleeve is Tipper Gore-friendly with the ‘parental advisory’ sticker. A plus point for all you people out there who are scared to death of words.
Whilst we’re here; the elephant in the room. Chris Morris in blackface. It’s not a good look, is it? And it’s fair to say that it wouldn’t be broadcast today. I still find it funny, but I’m very aware that a white person being the arbiter of what is or isn’t racist is an equally terrible look. When you think about it, it is astonishing how many white, supposedly liberal comedy people (Little Britain, The Mighty Boosh, The League of Gentlemen) didn’t see a problem with this not even that long ago.
We live and learn. Hopefully.
