Very exciting news about Radio Dibley! Yes, it is, isn’t it? I’m thinking of being a shock jock.
Forgive me for talking about myself for a brief second, but my design career has been a blizzard of radio station logos; Magic, KISS, Jazz FM, Virgin, Absolute, Capital… I’ve done the lot. Maybe not the lot, but pretty close. Mostly commercial, a little bit of BBC here and there. In a freelance capacity. I’m not Highlander. But because of this, this one proved to be a bit tricky. Sometimes you know too much. What I settled on is a bit of a bubble-fest and now also defunct. Just to get that out of the way.
In regards to the episode, the villagers of Dibley set up a short-lived local radio station to celebrate their local church’s 650th birthday, which involves many of the main characters getting a stint as a DJ. The pinnacle of which being Frank Pickle finally coming out on air after 40 years in the closet. Nobody listens to his show because they think he’s boring but lie and tell him his show was amazing.
If you’re not familiar with the programme, none of that will make a great deal of sense, but the Vicar of Dibley was pretty groundbreaking for the time. In a sort of prime-time, whimsical kind of way. Considering women could only be ordained within the Church of England in 1993, to have a sitcom based around a female vicar in 1994 is impressive. It’s Dawn French though, so you know you’re in good hands.
Speaking of being in good hands, let’s talk about Richard Curtis. I cannot abide the man. Not the Nine O’Clock News, Blackadder and this, great. Anything in the 21st century, terrible. The film ‘About Time‘ to me is ‘Goodnight Sweetheart: The Movie’ and ‘Love Actually’ is a fucking abomination. Egg from ‘This Life‘ creepily stalking his best friend’s wife isn’t romance and people calling their families from hijacked 9/11 flights isn’t the embodiment of human love.
Got a bit intense for the Vicar of Dibley there, didn’t we? Sorry about that.
