Anywhere they do French food? Yes, France, I believe. They seem to like it there, and the swim would certainly sharpen your appetite.

Now, this episode of Fawlty Towers originally aired in 1979. I think it’s fair to say that a Torquay restaurant’s logo probably wouldn’t have looked as modern as this back then. Even if it was sophisticated enough to be French. Not to wale on Devon or anything. Just Photoshop and the internet was struggling to exist in the 1970s.

The establishment is mentioned when Sybil is trying to chat up Mr Johnson, a young, tanned, open-shirted baboon-man that Basil (righly, imo) takes an instant dislike to. Johnson is the one enquiring about the Gallic cuisine and the above quote is Basil’s suitably acerbic riposte. Note that he isn’t as sharp in the tongue when recommending Leek House to Raylene later on in the show. Funny that, isn’t it?

The design is inspired by a hotel in Picadilly that’s renowned for its French food. It’s an apple in the shape of a heart. Oooff. Up all night with that one, lads. What even is French food, anyway? Snails, frogs, horses and all that. They reckon they rule the world as well. This is despite being directly adjacent to the true kings of cuisine. Italy, obviously. Though Spain are also pretty good, let’s be fair.

I don’t even eat meat though, so I probably don’t even know what I’m talking about.

Anyway, enjoy the Love Apple.
